It is pellucid that the academic staff union of universities (ASUU) is a threat to the sleek flowing of educational activities in Nigeria.

Nigerian students are always in the state of quandary about their education. A program of 3 years is taking up to about 5 years, 4 years course for 5-6 years while the supposed 5 years courses takes up to 8 years to be completed and then comes the battle with NYSC.

If the government cannot revitalize the educational system if need be, the students should manage the quack system, who cares about them after all? this is because if the situation is scrutinized, it is clear indication that the both parties ( ASUU and the federal government) are egocentric.

The institutions should be able to fund their projects from the fees students pay. Besides, even if their demands are met, the students will still pay fees as supposed.

What then is the use of ASUU for the educational system?

The federal government is being insensitive to the plight of the Nigerian students and ASUU on the other hand is being over demanding and on the receiving end of all these, are the students whose academic pursuits and goals are being jeopardized by the incessant strike actions of the lecturers and this kills students’ interest in their academic pursuit. The educational system will die if caution is not applied as the union has really halted the academic activities.

The societal effects of the strike are many; it affects the family, the nation’s image, the government and the quality of education.

In 2021, students stayed at home for close to a whole year because of strike action as well as the COVID-19 pandemic and then we are into the fourth month of another strike action in 2022 with no hope of students returning back to school.

Since the government cannot struck a good permanent deal, the situation will be worse if ASUU is not scrapped.

With no sign of solution, the fate of Nigeria’s educational sector and the future of the youth could reach a distressing point of no return.
